what's with the short cut capo?many shane barnard songs (especially on the "rocks won't cry" album) may be played using a cut capo a.k.a. partial capo a.k.a. foote capo a.k.a. short cut capo such as the one pictured below. a little history for this capo, billy foote wrote "you are my king" with the cut capo and showed it to chris tomlin in '98. inspired by chris tomlin's use of the capo, mitch bohannon (of Bo's Capos) encouraged the development of this new Kyser cut capo that is becoming popular in worship circles today. the fingering for many chords is easier with a cut capo, and you can get different chord "voicings".
how the short cut capo worksthe capo is placed on the 2nd fret, using standard guitar tuning (EADGBE). the cut capo covers only 3 strings, 3rd 4th and 5th. (tab: 022200) you can modify your own regular kyser capo with a hacksaw and utility knife (which is what i did before they were for sale) or you can buy one online. a few chords to get you started: ![]() using 2 capos for different keys:
cut capo alternativesyou can get the same idea sometimes by putting your kyser capo on backwards, as if you are capoing the back of the neck of your guitar. you can use the back support of the capo to effectively capo the 3 strings. another thing you could try is to tune your guitar to drop-D (the low-E string to a lower-D) and use the kyser capo as a partial capo, capoing the bottom 4 strings (tab:222200). similar idea and chord voicings, but fingering is a bit different. of course, you can always make one the old fashioned way... introduce mr. standard kyser capo to mr. hacksaw. you may prompt mr. capo to say something about mr. hacksaw's mother... that usually gets them going and before you know it, you have a short cut capo! buy the capo onlinefor you lazy types, buy the capo online at Bo's Capos (more instructions and chords also!) or check some of the sponsored links to the right! |
