Here's a link to a lexicon/concordance http://cf.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=H08415&Version=kjv
It may mean the turmoil of oceans/storms and big waves....I dunno. The NLT translates it "I hear the tumult of the raging seas as your waves and surging tides sweep over me."
Apparently, the word transalted to "deeps" in English could mean either an ocean or an abyss. I think it's just the idea of the very foundations of the earth recognizing God as their Maker. _________________ "You see, there is the ground and there is the sky and we are somewhere in between." |

well a lot of the bible are metaphors hiding the true meaning of things ie like parables. When reading the bible to understand it one cannot at all isolate one verse and hope to understand the full meaning but as my pastor keeps telling me Context context context. Know the backround by with the verse was written and the surrounding verses.
As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, O God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?
in the first 2 verses it is written describing a deep longing for God regardless of condition of lack thirst and food and such is continued in the 3rd verse
My tears have been my food
day and night,
while men say to me all day long,
"Where is your God?"
and also
My soul is downcast within me;
therefore I will remember you
and i feel it all comes down to just model a such a deep longing for God which the things of the world cannot take away, not lack of food nor the mocking of men nor downcasting of ones soul cannot take it away
.
Also it is written that this psalm is written by sons of korah and if we go and look up the backround of this Korah he was a Levite that disobeyed God and Moses (which can be further read up on in Numbers) and speaks of the punishment in Numbers 16
Then Moses said, "This is how you will know that the LORD has sent me to do all these things and that it was not my idea: If these men die a natural death and experience only what usually happens to men, then the LORD has not sent me. But if the LORD brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the grave, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt."
As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, with their households and all Korah's men and all their possessions. They went down alive into the grave, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community.
and the deep cries out to deep could be a comparison of the longing for God like the earth (God's supernatural actions) longing for and taking up Korah and his sons something inevitable and supernatural and these breakers and the waves referring the mouth of the earth swallowing them. So like Jesus coming or God coming etc like in vision of you is inevitable like it happened to Korah and a lot of his family so it seems inevitable fro his sons to get swallowed up too, and ir happening its more like a reminder/promise to ourselves like the verse in "Your Grace Is Enough" of remember your...etc of course God remembers and knows and will fulfill regardless but its a reminder for ourselves to have faith in his promise, presence, our share, etc.
Sorry for the rant the wee hours of morning do this to me i hope this helps in some small way and above all ask God man he knows why thats written there ask him for the spiritual wisdom and eyes to understand that without him its not possible i hope you ask him what it means and how God wants you to apply it in your life..hope this was of some help press on brother! |

my pastor actually explained his take on this verse, so i'll go by my notes to kinda show what he said.
the common idea of the meaning of the verse is usually your innermost being calling out to God. However, his take on it was that "deep calls to deep" is an expression of completely overwhelming circumstances (considering the rest of this psalm). and the "waves and breakers" are trials.
so i guess its moreso just a way of saying "i'm completely overwhelmed from the trials that have come across me."
hope that helps |

| our new youth pastor just recently challenged me to find out what "Deep cries out to deep" from the song All Who Are Thirsty means. If your read Psalm 42 you can find out what it means. The first deep is the storehouses of Heaven emptying into the rivers and streams of the second "deep". We are the second deep crying out to the first "deep" who is God, calling him to come into our lives and fill us with him. |

| I believe it means crying out from the deepest part of your soul for the deep things of God. When you are at the place where you are desperate for intimacy with God, to experience his heart and all that he is, for the fullness of God to be in you and through you. |
